Workplace Violence Prevention has become a top priority for MONA and our members. In 2025, MONA conducted a survey of our members and nurses across the state about workplace violence.

In 2026, MONA supported several workplace violence initiatives and successfully secured passage of legislation requiring workplace violence signage in healthcare settings. Governor Kehoe signed the legislation into law.

In 2026, MONA also released a Workplace Violence Prevention Toolkit. Please use this toolkit to learn best practices related to workplace violence prevention. We encourage you to share it with your healthcare institution and use this resource to strengthen workplace safety.

MONA plans to continue pursuing more legislative changes related to workplace violence prevention in 2027 and beyond. MONA promotes policies that strengthen workplace safety, ensure appropriate nurse staffing, prevent workplace violence, support nurse well-being, and improve recruitment and retention—recognizing that a safe, supported, and sustainable nursing workforce is essential to delivering high-quality patient care.

MONA believes that all Missourians deserve access to quality healthcare. We are proud of our legislative accomplishments that improve access to healthcare and plan to continue lending our voice to support legislation that helps patients across the state access care.

In recent legislative sessions, we have worked with partner groups on prior authorization reform, including passing prior authorization compromise language on a healthcare omnibus bill in 2026.

The Missouri Nurses Association (MONA) supports policies that strengthen access to high-quality, affordable, equitable, and timely physical and mental healthcare for all Missourians. MONA advocates for policies that reduce barriers to care, strengthen the healthcare workforce, expand access to preventive and primary care services, and ensure that patients can receive appropriate care from qualified healthcare professionals practicing to the full extent of their education, training, and licensure.

MONA recognizes that physical and mental health are interconnected and essential to overall health and well-being. We support policies that improve access to mental and behavioral health services, substance use prevention and treatment, crisis intervention, preventive care, and services for rural, underserved, and vulnerable populations.

For decades, MONA has been a leading voice for advancing full practice authority for APRNs in Missouri. We know Missouri is one of the strictest states in the country for APRNs and that it is also facing a healthcare crisis from the lack of access to primary care and mental healthcare in almost every county in the state.

APRNs should be free to practice to the full extent of their education and training. Research indicates APRNs provide safe, effective, efficient care for patients. If you are interested in learning more about this issue, please visit the Better Access Better Care website.

MONA was the lead organization that passed the APRN compromise language in 2023 that helped grant APRNs a license and also removed the outdated mileage restriction. Since then, MONA has been pursuing a Transition to Practice legislative strategy with varying degrees of progress each legislative session.

MONA and our lobbyist are very active in the Capitol monitoring hundreds of bills each year. One topic area that is always of interest is public health and immunizations. MONA believes that evidence-based practice should guide these policy discussions, and we will continue advocating with members of the General Assembly to protect public health and access to immunizations.

The Missouri Nurses Association (MONA) supports a strong, adequately funded public health system that protects and promotes the health of all Missourians. Nurses play an essential role in disease prevention, health education, emergency preparedness, infection prevention, and ensuring access to evidence-based healthcare services.

MONA recognizes immunization as an essential component of public health and supports the use of safe and effective vaccines to prevent disease, reduce serious illness, and protect individuals, families, and communities. Immunization is particularly important in protecting individuals who are most vulnerable to serious complications from vaccine-preventable diseases.

MONA supports evidence-based immunization policies and public education based on current scientific evidence and recognizes nurses as trusted healthcare professionals who have an important responsibility to provide patients and communities with accurate, understandable information regarding vaccines.

MONA supports policies that strengthen public health, preserve access to recommended immunizations, and protect communities from preventable infectious disease. MONA opposes policies that unnecessarily weaken established public health protections or create barriers to evidence-based disease-prevention efforts.
