The name, Edna Dell Weinel and public health nursing are one in the same. That is a fact! Edna Dell Weinel has extended her leadership talents and gifts to many organizations to promote and extend public health nursing and public health to many citizens in need. Her sphere of influence encompasses local, state, regional and national organizations and networks. Edna Dell is a role model and inspiration to all of the health care community and especially to community health nurses. She has influenced public policy by her work with the legislature of Missouri for universal access to health care. One of her former students said that Edna Dell helped to teach and guide a whole generation of public health nurses who looked to her as a prime role model who exemplified advocacy, integrity and compassion in service to Missouri citizens. Jan Polizzi, one of her students, wrote that “Edna Dell was persistent in making sure that we understood the nuts and bolts of establishing sound preventive health programs for the community and our clients”. It is our privilege to induct this “Empress of Public Health for St. Louis” into the Missouri Nurses Association Hall of Fame.
